Hayv Kahraman was born in Baghdad, Iraq 1981. Over the past decade, she has gained international recognition, and it is no wonder why. Her works are powerful, beautiful and emotionally charged, dealing with issues relating to the role of women, honour killings and war in her native land. What I find especially appealing about Hayv's work, is the way in which she has combined elements of traditional art, subtlety, and grace to conjure up deeply meaningful and often violent realities; Insinuation can often times be more effective than the obvious.
Hayv currently lives and works in San Francisco, United States.
